Volunteer Opportunities
Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer
We are evolving how we manage our financial stewardship! To ensure our leadership roles are sustainable and life-giving, we have transitioned from a single Treasurer position to a collaborative two-role structure. By splitting the work, we have made the roles more focused, reduced the individual time commitment, and built in automatic vacation coverage and support.
Two Roles, Two Ways to Serve
Whether you enjoy behind-the-scenes precision or high-level leadership, there is a place for your skills:
Assistant Treasurer (The Specialist): Focuses on "back-end" support such as financial analysis and reporting. Ideal for someone who loves detail and averages 15-20 hours per month.
Treasurer (The Leader): Acts as the "front-facing" financial voice on the Board. This role focuses on strategic leadership and reporting to the congregation.
Why Join the Finance Team?
Manageable Commitment: Splitting the roles significantly reduces the workload for each person.
Never Walk Alone: Both roles are part of the Finance Committee, offering a space for mentorship and collaboration.
Built-in Redundancy: You will have a partner who understands the work, ensuring peace of mind during vacations.
Growth Opportunity: The Assistant role is a perfect "on-ramp" to learn the ropes of church finance with the support of the Treasurer.
Interested? Please contact Jenny Mae Smith at jenny.smith@hillhurstunited.com to explore how these roles can fit your journey.

Music Matters 2026
This spring we’re hosting the 2026 Music Matters Conference, the annual gathering of Music United, the United Church Musicians Association. For three days (April 23-25) about 100 church musicians from across Canada will gather at Hillhurst to learn, sing, share ideas, and make a lot of joyful music together.
We’re thrilled that Hillhurst has the opportunity to host this year, especially since our own Amanda Massey serves as co-chair of the Music United executive. It’s a wonderful chance for our community to welcome musicians from across the country. You’ll also see some familiar Hillhurst faces sharing their gifts — Christy, Greg, and Amanda will be leading workshops, and the Hillhurst band will help lead music during the conference.
One of the really fun parts of this gathering is that many of the people who actually write the hymns we sing — and who help shape the hymnals used across the United Church — will be here. It’s always a treat to meet the people behind the music and hear the stories behind the songs.
There will also be some wonderful opportunities for the whole Hillhurst community to join in. Be sure to save the date for a community-wide hymn sing on Friday, April 24 at 7:00 pm. It will be a lively evening of singing favourite hymns together with musicians from across the country. Then on Sunday, April 25, many of these visiting musicians will join us for worship.
And of course, none of this happens without the amazing Radical Hospitality Hillhurst is known for.
We’ll be welcoming about 100 guests, and there are lots of ways to help make them feel at home. You might help host coffee breaks, lunches, or dinners at the church, bring baking or snacks to share, prepare a meal, or billet a guest in your home. It’s a great way to meet people from across the country, share some laughs, hear incredible music, and show our visitors what Hillhurst is all about.
If you’d like to be part of the team that makes this joyful gathering possible, we’d love your help. People who are interested in learning more or volunteering can contact Amanda at amanda.massey@hillhurstunited.com or sign up here:
Building & Maintenance Contributors
Help keep Hillhurst United Church safe, welcoming, and well cared for. Building and Maintenance Contributors play a hands-on role in supporting the church’s mission by maintaining facilities, performing minor repairs, and caring for our grounds. From safety inspections and event setup to routine upkeep and reporting larger maintenance needs, this team ensures our spaces are ready for worship, fellowship, and ministry to flourish.
No professional experience is required. Volunteers just need a willingness to serve, a positive attitude, and basic handyman or landscaping skills. Volunteers can work independently or as part of a team, contributing 4 to 8 hours per month. Training and safety orientation are provided.
How to get involved: Email Robert Perry at robert.perry@hillhurstunited.com
Trustee
We are seeking dedicated volunteers to serve as Trustees for our church building. As outlined in the UCC Board of Trustees Handbook, Trustees play an essential role in caring for and overseeing our property. This includes treating the building with the same time and care as your own, ensuring appropriate insurance coverage, staying informed about property needs, and helping supervise repairs and maintenance. Trustees also meet together to make thoughtful decisions about the building’s present care and future direction.
If you love our building and would like to help steward this important part of our church community, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Lea at board.chair@hillhurstunited.com.
Support Our Refugee Ministry
Can you help us make a tangible difference in the lives of refugee families seeking safety and a fresh start?
At Hillhurst, we are continuing the work of the Refugee Ministry, and we need compassionate, committed individuals to join us in this important work. Whether you have a heart for hands-on help or a mind for planning and administration, there’s a place for you here.
Volunteer Opportunities Include:
Governance & Leadership: Help shape our ministry’s direction through roles in finance, administration, planning, and strategic oversight.
Direct Support & Settlement: Be part of the welcoming team! Assist newly arrived families with housing setup, transportation, orientation, and ongoing support as they settle into the community.
Whether you can give a few hours a month or more, your time and gifts can change lives.
